The Summerville Artist Guild Oversees Summerville ROCKS!

The Summerville Artist Guild Board is pleased to announce that we have accepted the challenge of overseeing the Summerville Rocks! initiative.  Jan Dalton will Chair and Deborah King Scherer will co-chair this committee of the Guild for the first year.  Along with them, Faith Cuda, Claire Hudson, Yarbi Winkle, Donna Pilkerton, Diana Barth and Judy Larocque will help make next year’s auction another roaring success!  Other positions are still open—if you are intrigued, please contact Jan for more info.

Summerville Rocks! began in 2013 as a way to raise money for the Larry Barnfield Arts Scholarship.  Since then, more than $17,000 has been raised to help aspiring student artists in Dorchester District 2 schools achieve the dream of furthering their art education at the college level.

This project involves the whole community.  Local businesses sponsor the rocking chairs, both adult-sized and child-sized, local artists decorate the chairs, and local art supporters bid on the chairs at the annual auction/dinner in April.

The Board is very excited about the opportunities this program offers our members.  Think about how you can be involved.  More detailed information will be coming soon!

Savannah Huggins received the first Larry Barnfield Arts Scholarship

At this year’s Summerville ROCKS! auction, Larry Barnfield announced that Savannah Huggins of Summerville High School will be the first recipient of the scholarship established in his name. She will receive $8,000 in proceeds from last year’s auction. Savannah intends to pursue a music degree at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.

Photos from the 2015 Summerville ROCKS! Auction

All 47 large artist-decorated rocking chairs, along with five children’s rockers, went under the auctioneer’s hammer last Saturday night, April 25, all to fund next year’s Larry Barnfield Arts Scholarship, going to a Dorchester District 2 student majoring in the arts.
